Meet Dr. Gutu

Stephen T. H. Gutu, MD is a dedicated, compassionate and caring pediatric neurologist with 21 years of general medical experience, including 8-13 years of neurological experience as well as teaching of medical students and residents.


He was born in Harare, Zimbabwe and left in 1995 to pursue further studies at St. George’s University School of Medicine (SGUSOM), Grenada, starting with the final year of Pre-medicine. He graduated in 2000 with a Doctor of Medicine degree (MD) after undertaking enriching clinical clerkships at various hospitals in the United Kingdom and the USA. Dr. Gutu also completed a one-year internship at the General Hospital in Grenada followed by a Clinical Tutor Fellowship program at SGUSOM. He feels forever indebted to the SGU community and the warm people of Grenada, where he also has some roots and citizenship. 


Dr. Gutu did his General Pediatrics residency at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center, NY ; then Pediatric Neurology residency and Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship at the University of New Mexico , Albuquerque, NM, where he received an award for the “Best Scientific Research Presentation in Neurology.” In 2011 he was awarded the Arnold P. Gold Humanism in Medicine Honor and inducted into the UNM chapter.

He worked at Blank Children’s Hospital Pediatric Neurology clinic in Des Moines, Iowa for 7 years where he was exposed to various neurological conditions under supportive and empowering leadership. He was also an adjunct clinical assistant professor at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine.

In June 2018, he was awarded the James Derham Health Award “For acknowledgement of outstanding service and contribution to the field of health in Iowa”. In 2019, Dr. Gutu was awarded a scholarship by the Iowa Medical Society to partake in the inaugural class of the Physician Business Leadership Certificate Program, DSM, Iowa. He is deeply grateful for that unique experience. 

In July 2020, Dr. Gutu was appointed a Board member of the Iowa Medical Society Foundation (IMSF) Board of Directors. 

Dr. Gutu has also travelled extensively, and has rotated through, trained or worked in over 22 hospitals internationally since 1989. This enriching, invaluable and humble experience, which he attributes to Divine appointment, helped shape his bedside manner, clinical acumen, passion for patient advocacy and high-quality service delivery with a servant leadership attitude.
